AIMS

The Science Department wants to inspire the next generation of scientists. We aim to provide a broad, balanced and enjoyable science education for all of our students. We believe that an appreciation of science is essential in society today, and we try to give our students the knowledge, skills and understanding to fully appreciate and engage with the world around them.

YEAR 7 CURRICULUM:

Our new Year 7 course builds on science learned in primary school. Students study a range of topics both familiar and unfamiliar, gaining a broad introduction to key stage 3 science. Students develop their practical skills by doing many experiments in our well-equipped science labs.

Cells Reproduction
Particles Atoms, Elements and Compounds
Acids and Alkalis Forces
Energy

Students also complete a Summer Holiday Independent Learning Project on Space.

YEAR 8 CURRICULUM:

Students continue to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of a broad range of biology, chemistry and physics topics.

Ecosystems Adaption
Periodic Table The Earth
Chemical Reactions Electricity and Magnetism
Motion

YEAR 9 CURRICULUM:

Students begin GCSE Science and study topics that overlap with key stage 3 content, so they have a smooth transition from key stage 3 to 4.

Organisation and Digestive System Non-Communicable Diseases
Atomic Structure Chemical Changes, Acids and Metals
Wave Properties Electromagnetic Waves

KEY STAGE 4

Students study AQA’s GCSE Combined Science Triology. This course gives a very good all-round education in science and is excellent preparation for A Level work in science. Topics studied:

Biology: Cell Biology, Organisation, Infection and response, Bioenergetics, Homeostasis and response, Inheritance, Variation and Evolution, Ecology

Chemistry: Atomic structure and the periodic table, Bonding, structure and the properties of matter, Quantitative chemistry, Chemical changes, Energy changes, The rate and extent of chemical change, Organic Chemistry, Chemical analysis, Chemistry of the atmosphere, Using resources

Physics: Forces, Energy, Waves, Electricity, Magnetism and electromagnetism, Particle model of matter, Atomic structure
